I use a gray background for my Windows's GUI objects such as the taskbar. The WM icon in the system tray does not have enough contrast, particularly on the right hand side, which makes it hard, for me, to identify quickly (see attached). Solution: Use the window version of the WM icon, which has a stronger colour contrast.
Attached image shows a comparison of the window and system tray versions of the WM icon.

We have presented several icon images to Windows. The choice of the exact icon is made automatically. The suggested solution can be unjustified in some non-standard themes.

I have some more info about the system tray icon.
The system tray icon is 16x16 pixels. I suspect that Windows, even though there is a 16x16 icon present, uses the 32x32 pixel icon for the system tray by scaling it down (32x32 to 16x16). Hence by enhancing the 32x32 bit icon, the system tray icon can be improved.
Do you have the icon's graphic designer on staff? If not, I could see what I could do.
