Is there a good way to be a useful beta tester, besides just using the product daily and seeing if something breaks? I would like to become an active contributor, but it seems not super beneficial to just go about my business waiting for something to happen.
Any advice for a new beta tester to be more helpful?

I would suggest focusing on areas of change (trying out new features, and using ones that changed) as noted in the release notes in terms of trying to help test what's different. On the flip side, everyday use is the best way to test existing functionality.
