I reinstalled it without support for system utilities and that appears to have "fixed" it. It still has a period where the system is unresponsive but it is only a couple of seconds instead of anything upto a minute.

Couple of seconds period is normal for AWM. Is it acceptable to you?

Also, are you using any anti-virus software? Could you try to temporarily disable it?, start AWM in the "Run as administrator" mode and check whether the problem appears.
